Welcome to Tha FaQ is This? where I try to understand trends in television, movies, and pop culture in general.
Now I’m an avid Pinterester.
And one thing I’ve noticed lately is a creepy little thing…on a shelf.

So what is The Elf on the Shelf? Well the idea of elves on shelves have been around since the Danish thought of Nissors. Yea, same thing.

Hell my grandma has something very similar to this and has been part of her decorations ever since I was a fetus.
But this new wave of Elf voyeurs is because of a book/marketing thing. It was written by Carol Abersold and her daughter Chanda Bell and tells of a North Pole tradition where Elves go down to our world and spy on us and tell Santa if we’re good or not. If you adopt one and name it it gets magic.
In 2011 CBS aired a special based upon the book.

Ok so what do I think of this creepy Yuletide trend?
Well I wasn’t able to read the book because the books are only available in the expensive box that comes with the doll.
But I did watch the 2011 half hour special. And boy is it stuuuuupppidddd.
The special has un-necessary songs, a message that’s been beaten to death, bad CG animation, bad voice actors, and in your fucking face obvious commercializing.

Oh what the fuck?! It even got a Macy’s Balloon!
So yea, this trend sucks and thank god it’s only a holiday thing.
That being said, here are my three favorite images that I found while writing this article;

Everyone loves Dexter elf

So I guess I can say this is NSFW

That’s one smooth elf
