Okay, let me start this off by saying, Welcome to my first article that will be featured on RT Gomer Production’s website. I am very proud to be a part of the site in this capacity. So what will my first article be on? How about I talk about why I review? This will be how I got into reviewing and why I continue doing it.
Starting at the beginning, a few years ago, 2010 was the year it began. I discovered SFDebris and I loved it. It inspired me to try text reviews… I was not very good at it, Not at all. So I stopped them. I continued watching SFDebris of course, but stopped reviewing. Then came 2012.
In January of every year, my school has Regents exams which lead to students getting a week or two off in January before getting our classes reprogrammed (long story, not fun to explain). So during that week I found an immense love for Quantum Leap, and coincidentally, Atop the Fourth Wall. I had seen Linkara in a related video from SFDebris in the summer, more specifically his Mightily Murdered Power Ringers #1 review. I loved it, but the half hour format got to me. I was not used to more than 15 minutes of reviews, so I never watched him again. I sought the video out again and discovered History of Power Rangers. I watched all of them in a week’s span and then watched episodes of the show. So, I then discovered the glory that is That Guy with the Glasses. I watched Spoony, Linkara, Nostalgia Critic, the list goes on. And they inspired me to start reviewing.
My first review was a poorly made Quantum Leap review. Then a few poorer videos until finally I made my first true review, my Doctor Who: The Auton Invasion review. That was a hobby and I did it for fun, taking hiatuses whenever I felt like knowing that no one was watching them, because I was a new reviewer, who would find it? I stopped during the summer because of burnout, but I felt an emptiness during that summer, so at the end of it I started again. I reviewed Red Dwarf: Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers and thus I started my true reviewing stage. I finally took it seriously and started following more reviewers to draw inspiration from. The list grew to include Jew Wario, Nash, JesuOtaku, Pawdugan and MarzGurl, reviewers I previously didn’t follow due to not liking their genres. But I began to hone my skills and get better.
Cue, January of 2013! Just a few months ago, I started the year off with a review and a set update day. I decided that I shall have a set update day, Thursday. I started to plan for the coming year. Do Hitchhiker’s Guide, expand my audience and more importantly, make the show better. Make the Literary Lair what I wanted it to be. Make it, my show, and my brainchild that I would raise and it would grow.
Here’s where I will answer questions that people may have. Why books? Well, when I started I had a pile of books next to my camera and said, “What the hell?” and used them. Why do I enjoy it so much? That’s a tough one, maybe because I finally found something that I am truly good at and that is a decent video making medium. I know I will never be Linkara or Doug Walker but, I am me and I review books. And I really enjoy it and that’s all that matters to me.
So there it is, my first article. I think it went well. Next time it will be something in more relation to something, not as personal as this one. I hope that you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it.
