Cleaning out some mental clutter before the holiday
So here we are only a couple of days before Christmas. Instead of rambling on about my favorite Christmas special (Everyone else has done that rather well) I just wanted to cover a bunch of things this week. I also wanted to use the phrase of Bric-à-brac in a serious manner.
Of course the big bit of news is all this hullabaloo about The Interview. Seriously, at this time last year when people started looking ahead to 2014, did anyone seriously think we would be going into a cyber war with North Korea over a Seth Rogan movie? I can understand Not-so-little Kim’s beef with the The Interview, it’s not the first time this has happened, but seriously, did anyone (Dennis Rodman?) explain just what a Seth Rogan movie equates to in this country? Is there a Korean phrase for “fart in a wind tunnel”? Sure, it may make a lot of money, but it is entirely forgettable as soon as it’s released. Seth Rogan is on my list of people who I avoid at the movies at all costs. This is one of those things that when people look back at 2014, it will be remembered with “What the hell was that all about?!” And you know what, when it is finally released (more like “escaped”) you are going to have a bunch of people saying it wasn’t that great of a movie anyway.
Another thing that I hadn’t touched on was the release of the teaser trailer to the next Star Wars Movie, The Force Awakens. Now, I’m not a huge Star Wars fan. I like the series and all that but I’m not up on the huge back story of all the characters as much as I know a lot of others are. With that said, I’m not taking a lot out of that trailer. The big thing that everyone is in an uproar about is the new light saber, and the appearance of the black character in the storm trooper outfit. The thing about the storm trooper thing is this, how do we know he was an actual storm trooper and not just someone is disguise? Hell, Luke and Han did it, Hell, they did it SPACEBALLS, so from where I’m sitting it seems like an uproar about nothing. As for that new light saber, I might not be up on how the light sabers work in the Wars universe, but I would think the design with the two small light sources would be a waste of energy wouldn’t it? I dunno. I’m sure someone more into that universe than me is up on all that.
In a topic that was brought up weeks ago, TNA Impact Wrestling did in fact find a new home, Discovery Network’s Destination America channel. It seems like DA is going full boar with it, giving Impact a Friday night time slot and adding a bunch of new programming to the line up. It’s good that TNA found someone who is willing to devote so much effort to them, hope it pays off. But at the same time DA isn’t carried nearly as much as Spike (I would have to pay extra to see the network, which I’m not) so all this new programming may be great, but if no one sees it what is the point? 2015 will be an interesting year for TNA.
The other big wrestling topic I didn’t get a chance to cover is CM Punk signing a deal with the UFC. Gotta admit, I was taken by surprise by this. I looked at this differently from different perspectives. For Punk (or Phil Brooks now I guess), if he is serious and wants to do this than good for him. He seems like an intelligent guy so hopefully he knows as a 35 year old going into his first MMA fight that he does have a hill to climb to make this really successful for him. I’m not going to rag on him for being a wrestler getting into MMA, since I’ve seen wrestlers go into MMA and do rather well. On the other hand I have to take the UFC to task a bit for this. The UFC has a rep for being rather underhanded and Dana White is not one of my favorite people, but you gotta wonder how all these guys who try to get to the UFC feel when someone with no MMA experience gets all this attention on them, a contract, and their own press conference without doing a lick inside the Octagon. Seems like a cash grab for a company that always tries to make itself look legitimate. And on top of all that the anti-trust lawsuit isn’t helping their image any.
Within the last few days both Stephen Colbert and Craig Ferguson finished up their shows. I would occasionally catch the Colbert Report and found it funny, witty, and original. It will be interesting to see how Colbert takes over for Dave Letterman, but I think he has the chops to do it. Craig Ferguson I am a huge fan of. His show was so different and unique in everything he did. Hell, just all the stuff in his finale with tributes to show finales past was only a small indication of what he provided. His show will be sorely missed, and for everything he had to overcome in his life, I hope he finds something that makes him happy.
Well, with that stuff touched on, I just want to wish everyone a Happy Holiday. Whether your 2014 has been amazing or a pile of crap, I hope your holidays at least give you something positive to carry into the New Year, however you are able to spend it.
