Just cast Colin Baker as an aged (possibly future incarnation) of Commander Maxil, extend the scenes in the war council room – especially if you had him under the command of Romana – Reduce the historically aggrevating stuff with to compensate for the run time while giving them about as much screen time and dialogue as Tom Baker got, and boom. Colin Baker, even without changing the story, was so bloody easy to get into the 50th.
