Oh, This takes me back.
The big news that has come out is the not so surprising news that Nintendo will be releasing a SNES retro system in September. The new system will feature 21 Super Nintendo games from days gone by. Of course, when Nintendo made a classic NES system a number of months ago, there was a number of “Games we want to see on a SNES Retro system” almost immediately. Hopefully, though this time around they actually make enough systems to meet demand, but I’m skeptical of it. Also not exactly thrilled about the $80 price tag.
Anyway, being a bit of an old fart compared to a lot of the gamers today, I had a lot of time back in the day in front of a TV playing the original Super Nintendo and many MANY of the games that came out for it. Now, the list of the 21 games that are on this system is not a bad one. The games are: Contra III: The Alien Wars, Donkey Kong Country, EarthBound, Final Fantasy III, F-ZERO, Kirby Super Star, Kirby’s Dream Course, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Mega Man X, Secret of Mana, Star Fox, Star Fox 2, Street Fighter® II Turbo: Hyper Fighting, Super Castlevania IV, Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts, Super Mario Kart, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Super Punch-Out!!, and Yoshi’s Island. The big draw is Star Fox 2, a game that was developed in the mid 90’s and given a lot of press at the time but was never finished or released.
That is a pretty heavy duty list of the most popular games from the original system. Link to the Past and Super Mario RPG especially since they both show up on the top of lists of Best SNES Games Ever. Not only that but both were fun as hell and were epic games and stories to play back then. I rented Mario RPG for two weeks one summer staying with my grandmother, and when I went home. I bought the game immediately for myself. I also owned F-Zero, Star Fox, Street Fighter 2, Mario Kart, Mario World, And Super Punch Out. All great and fun games and deserve to be on the list.
But of course, I have a few games I’d love to add to that list:
Saturday Night Slam Masters
TMNT: Turtles in Time
Stunt Race FX
Super Adventure Island
The Ren and Stimpy Show: Veediots!
The Simpson’s: Bart’s Nightmare
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
WWF Royal Rumble
I can understand why some of those won’t be rereleased on this system with rights fees, loss of rights and stuff. But Pilotwings and Earthworm Jim surprise the crap out of me. Pilotwings was a launch title, if not released soon after. Earthworm Jim was a hot property back then so it should have made the cut. With Street Fighter 2, I imagine that Nintendo didn’t want to fill up on Capcom games but that’s a shame because Slam Masters and Final Fight were very fun games as well. Turtles in Time was one of the best games for the Turtles, but with the rights in the hands of Nickelodeon now, that could get expensive. Stunt Race FX was fun as hell, but not exactly one that defined the system, especially with Star Fox 1 and 2 on the system already.
It’s a shame a few of these games couldn’t have been added as well, but that is how it goes. Regardless, it all still takes me back. What games do you wish came back with this system?
