And no, I’m not quitting or retiring.
Gotta say it has not been the best of times lately. If you follow a lot of internet content makers then most of you know about Channel Awesome and the #Changthechannel thing that has been going on. It’s not a pleasant experience watching the once great site we all used to follow falling apart once again because of the guys in charge and their mismanagement and just some of the horrible ways they have treated people on the years. And that is just the easy stuff to digest.
As surprisingly enough, I have a small experience with it. Many years ago, before the books, before the various jobs as a freelance writer, hell before even this article, I actually applied for Channel Awesome when they had a massive round of auditions for new content makers to the site. I sent an email in after it was announced and wondered if they had any place from a writer and written content on the site. Honestly, I do not know who was the one to actually answer it, but the reply was “Sure! We have a written section on our site! Send something along!” So I did. I sent them two different articles reviewing the first Wrestlemania event. One was written as a straight-up review, while the other was a more fictitious styled review that probably would not have been picked up anywhere. So that got sent in, and I actually started posting on the open contributor system they used to have on their website for a few weeks. Not the best stuff I’ve ever made but eh. Anyway, I waited…and waited…and waited. I joined the old fan site and talked with others who were also waiting for results. It was a LONG time before we would hear back. But in one of the NC episodes, the person in charge of the auditions said that they had a bunch that was eliminated immediately because they didn’t really do anything, just filmed themselves talking about stuff they wanted to review and that was it. I figured I was going to be ahead of the curve because I wasn’t doing a video, I was a writer. I was different.
Guess how that turned out.
Needless to say, I got the rejection letter. I got it sent after midnight one night. I was crushed. Not only that but I REALLY hated myself for it. It was said a few times after the letter came in by others “You auditioned for a video site as a writer?” and I felt stupid for doing so and believing the original email in the first place and getting my hopes up that I actually had a chance at it. I disconnected from the site and was never the same fan I had been before, to the point where I don’t even go there anymore, although with everyone branching off on their own, I really don’t have to either.
Heartbroken and wallowing in depression and self-hatred (Depression is a thing I have dealt with long before this) I posted a post to the fan forum not only that I had failed, but I really wasn’t taking it well. Got a few responses (some were oh so “nice”) but got a response from a certain RT Gomer I had never heard of before saying that CA “Wasn’t even the only site holding auditions” right now. Without any better ideas, I checked it out and sure enough, they were holding auditions and they were looking for article writers too. And it doesn’t take a genius to figure out how a much better audition went because I’m still here. I’ve NEVER had any of the problems people from THAT site complained about. None of them. There has been no problem for me on this site at all. So for that, Thank you RT Gomer Productions!
So I guess in the end maybe me and a number of others who tried out and were rejected weren’t so bad off after all. I will say that the list some of us followed of who got in and who was rejected at the time introduced me to some talented creators.
But more importantly then that, this site has been a big help not only as me as a writer (My Books and e-books can be found here) but when I can put “Damn Write!” on my resume, it has helped me find paid work over the years. So this place has really improved my life in that way as well.
So Thank You to RT Gomer Productions for NOT being that other place to me and giving me a place to do my thing, writing for all of you!
Now, before I go I want to point anyone reading this towards a special little pup who is part of the family of a friend of mine. I have not had the chance to meet her personally, but Bailey isn’t feeling too good and she needs some help. Poor Bailey could use the kindness of strangers so if you are reading this, I ask you to give her a little love and help her and Jen out. She has had a rough one so far so she could use the help. You can donate to her and her human Jen HERE.
