Squirrels, Turkeys, Hawks, Dear, Oh My!

It is getting cooler outside as the year winds down. It is Election Day here in Maine and besides how glad I am to see our outgoing governor announce he is moving to Florida and am thinking of the backyard and all the critters I get to see show up for some food or just a visit.

I live on a small dead-end road, in between some forest and a horse farm, so there tends to be a lot of little critters at various times of the year. We get grey Squirrels. Usually about six or seven of those at a time. They like the stuff that falls out of the birdfeeders in the backyard and for the most part, they are not a problem. They tend to just chase each other around more than do much else. I like watching them as those furry little guys are fun to watch. They don’t ask to be petted or anything, and they usually stay clear of humans and animals that they know might be a problem.

Along with them, this time of year brings out a couple of smaller red squirrels. They and a LOT quicker than the bigger and fatter gray ones, but they like stuff off the feeders as well. I’ve seen a couple of fights between the red and grey squirrels too. Squirrels aren’t cuddlers that is for sure!

We see a lot of turkeys too. I’m not sure where but I’m guessing there is more than one nest in the wooded area as families are Turkeys have been showing up for years. I’ve seen groups as big as 30 or so at a time. My favorite has got to be in the early parts of the year when the mothers trot out the new little birds to show the young ones where to go. Baby Turkeys are adorable.

We also get a lot of other birds as well. Smaller ones like Robins, Cardinals, Chickadees, and Blue Jays. We get hummingbirds and woodpeckers. and sometimes we get a hawk show up as well. Most everything stays away from that one, but those seem to be migratory birds so they don’t show up much.

Other critters show up to, being in between a horse farm and wild Maine woods. Skunks, Possums, even a groundhog have shown up in the recent past. Even today a couple of young deer showed up in the neighbor’s yard for the first time that I have seen. Never seen either one of the deer before, but they scampered over to the horse farm so they must’ve smelt something.

With all these wild animals running around it can actually be peaceful. It is fun to see what is going on around you and see what everyone is doing. It is entertaining and fun to watch too. So, take some time and take notice of the critters, wherever you are. They can be just as much fun as anything else you may find.

Now, before I go I want to point anyone reading this towards a special little pup who is part of the family of a friend of mine. I have not had the chance to meet her personally, but Bailey isn’t feeling too good and she needs some help. Poor Bailey could use the kindness of strangers so if you are reading this, I ask you to give her a little love and help her and Jen out. She has had a rough one so far so she could use the help. You can donate to her and her human Jen HERE.
