It was a good show but I am not good at predicting this!

The Royal Rumble is a big event for me as a wrestling fan. I became a fan right around the time of the first event on pay per view in 1989 and got to see the show by renting it on VHS from the local Home Vision Video back in the day. Ever since I have always caught the event featuring 30 big time WWE wrestlers with the idea of throwing them over the top rope and to the floor. Nowadays there are two rumbles with the men and the women getting a match. The event has become a show with a lot of surprises. I covered my picks last week. How did I do and how did the show do? Let’s take a look.

Pre-Show: WWE UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP: Rusev (c) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura: It was there but I wonder if WWE even gives a crap anymore. Remember when Nakamura won the Rumble last year? I wonder if anyone in the WWE does? Guess his run at the top is over. I totally gave this to Rusev but they did some goofy stuff and had Lana hurt her ankle again and gave Nakamura the win. This might be the end of the road for either guy.

Pre-Show: WWE CRUISERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP: Buddy Murphy (c) vs. Kalisto vs. Akira Tozawa vs. Hideo Itami: This match was really good! A lot of action from all four guys. I gave it to Itami but Buddy Murphy ended up retaining in a good match, especially from a match in the pre-show.

Pre-show: Bobby Roode/Chad Gable v/s Scott Dawson/Rezar: Didn’t predict this one as it was thrown together at the last minute. Wondered if any of these guys would get on the show and they found a way to do it. Interesting way to get around the injury to the other guy in Authors of Pain. Not perfect, but I give a hand by the WWE for getting these guys on the show.

WWE UNIVERSAL CHAMPIONSHIP: Brock Lesnar (with Paul Heyman) (c) vs. Finn Balor: I picked Brock Lesnar to win and not surprisingly he did. It was not a good match as Brock just got his ass kicked for the first 2/3rds of the match and then did all of his moves before getting the clean pinfall. It didn’t do very well and looks like Brock just didn’t really care. Why is he still champion again?

WWE CHAMPIONSHIP: Daniel Bryan (c) vs. AJ Styles: I picked Bryan to win and he did, but what an ending! Why the heck was Erick Rowan there? I guess the Blugeon brothers idea is in the garbage now? Did we need Bryan running his version of the Wyatt Family? I’m not agreeing with that idea at all.

WWE SMACKDOWN WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP: Asuka (c) vs. Becky Lynch: I gave this one to Becky Lynch and she lost. Still, this was a good match with a lot of submission wrestling and touch fighting and that is good to me. Did anyone else notice the ref at one point telling both women to get in the ring and called both women idiots? Is that what I heard?

WWE RAW WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP: Ronda Rousey (c) vs. Sasha Banks: I gave this to Rhonda and she retained the belt, but not in the way I expected. Bayley didn’t play a part in it and Sasha lost the match in a fairly clean way. Better then I expected.

WWE SMACKDOWN TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP: The Bar (c) vs. The Miz and Shane McMahon: I gave this one to The Bar and nope, Shane and Miz won the belts. This was actually a better match then I expected and was wowed when Shane pulled off the Shooting Star Press from the top rope to score the pin. They put the effort into this one!

WOMEN’S ROYAL RUMBLE: Gave this to Charlotte was close but it was Becky Lynch being inserted into the match and she won it. This was not a bad rumble. Thankfully it was not filled with a bunch of old divas from the past but there were a lot of women from the Developmental System. I’m okay with that as it still made it fun!

MEN’S ROYAL RUMBLE: I picked Seth Rollins to win and he got it. This was another example of why the rumble matches are a lot of fun with all the mystery entrants into the match and without a lot of the usual “comeback” names like Goldust or Kevin Nash, not all the rumored Bullet Club guys supposedly coming from Japan it actually made for another great time!

So keeping score my picks were 4-5-1 for the night. That is not a great percentage but the show itself was enjoyable and nothing supper terrible happened so I’m happy. Good show!

Now, before I go I want to point anyone reading this towards a special little pup who is part of the family of a friend of mine. I have not had the chance to meet her personally, but Bailey isn’t feeling too good and she needs some help. Poor Bailey could use the kindness of strangers so if you are reading this, I ask you to give her a little love and help her and Jen out. She has had a rough one so far so she could use the help. You can donate to her and her human Jen HERE.
