Starbolts #290: Angel vs Monster

Step right up! Step right up! It’s the fight of the century! In one corner it’s the most powerful Starbolt, the angelic latina from New Mexico versus a giant fire breathing turtle that takes on Angela’s worse fear! Tickets are available at the box office! Kids get in free for this one time fight! (Or is it one time?)

Yep. Angela’s fighting Kyodon this week on the mental plane. It’s a tough fight. But, it looks like a greater battle awaits as we march on toward Starbolts #300!

Haunting of Cellblock 11

HCB11Do you believe in ghost hunters? EVP? EMF? I was in a ghost hunting mood last week so I took in a few good ghost hunting/psychic shows and a movie.

Haunting of Cell Block 11  was made last year. A group of paranormal investigators with mediocre ratings take a case in a haunted prison that sounds quite promising. Inside is the ghost of a psychotic inmate. It mimics Ghost Adventures with the overacting host and gimmicky quips on camera, but they refuse to add fake effects to their footage. There are only a few jumpscares so you do not expect them, which is awesome. A lot of times, you think something is going to pop up, but nothing does. That is even better since it does not release the tension in the body. It is just a bit better than most horror movies of today. Considering it does not flood the script with jumpscares, I would say that is a win. I liked it but it is not everyone’s cup of tea.

This movie could be rewatched once or twice. Has some good spooky moments but few jumpscares. It is available on Hulu for free. 7/10.

Open Water

open_water_ver3I don’t know what I expected from Open Water but Hulu labeled it as a horror movie. Susan and Daniel are taking a vacation from their hectic life to dive in the Great Barrier Reef. The diving boat miscounted how many people came back up from the water and left them behind. They face sharks, jellyfish, sharks, dehydration, sharks, panic, and sharks. Daniel dies, is eaten by sharks, and then Susan goes under, grabbed by a shark. The story is based on Tom and Eileen Lonergan who disappeared after they were stranded at the reef where they were diving in January of 1998. Wikipedia says the movie is pretty close to what happened.

No one can say what happened after the boat left in the real story but when the boat leaves, there are a few boats in the distance. Even if they were too far to swim to, they could have shouted out. Sound carries well out on the ocean. They also did not have/use a diving whistle, which experienced divers would have. I have been diving three times. The boating group were highly negligent. Any competent boat would check their equipment before the dive and after the dive. No one uses headcount with adults. They should have had a roll-call.

The main gripe I have about the movie is that half of it was soul music and pictures of people and animals on land. There was one shot that was a solid minute of water effects and humming. The other half was bad dialogue and sharks. Watching this movie is not a valuable experience whatsoever.

Waste of time. 3/10. It is available on Hulu with a subscription.

Starbolts #289: The Angel of Truth

Angela Arlandero is a metahuman who is probably one of the strongest of the Starbolts. She can force the truth out of someone, which could be funny if she ever encountered someone who wanted to do nasty things to her. The fact is, though, she has trouble controlling it and that’s why she’s a bit unsure of her own abilities. She may be strong, but, she has a lot to learn about the power she has. She has a lot of untapped potential and it’s going to show in the next comic!

In this comic, I wanted to show Angela in her element as an empath and as potentially one of the strongest of the Starbolts’ generation of heroes. Sure she can fly, shoot energy blasts and become a being made of ethereal energy. She still has to control her powers and has a lot to learn.

I made the jail scene be kind of like the Black Widow/Loki scene from Avengers. It was fun to do and helped to showcase her powers. Will she be successful? Find out soon enough!
